Julie Taymor instruerer denne musicalfortolkning af Disneys ualmindeligt populære tegnefilm Løvernes Konge. Tim Rice og Elton Johns musical, der havde premiere i London i oktober 1999, vandt seks Tony Awards på Broadway, modtog Evening Standard Award for Theatrical Event of the Year og er blevet indstillet til otte Olivier Awards.

Da den unge løveprins Simba fødes, skubbes hans onde onkel Scar tilbage i tronfølgen. Scar planlægger at myrde både Simba og hans far, King Mufasa, så han selv kan overtage tronen. Simba overlever, men forledes til tro, at han er skyld i sin fars død og beslutter sig for at flygte fra kongeriget.
